Community, Health and Business Leaders Highlight Importance of Comprehensive Approach to Addiction

(Wells, ME) – Health, law enforcement, business and drug prevention organizations joined community leaders today to launch the Rx Abuse Leadership Initiative (RALI) of Maine. RALI Maine was established to bring stakeholders together to address the state’s opioid epidemic, which took the lives of more than 300 Mainers in 2016. Founding partners include the Addiction Policy Forum, Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA), National Association on Mental Illness Maine, Easter Seals Maine, Maine State Chamber of Commerce, and the Maine Pharmacy Association, among others.

The alliance will initially focus on raising awareness of, and providing tools for, the proper storage and disposal of prescription medications. One method for safely removing unused medicines from the home is drug disposal pouches. RALI Maine will begin its public outreach by distributing 50,000 drug disposal pouches to partners and organizations across the state.

“It’s imperative that we work collaboratively to combat the opioid epidemic and substance use disorder in Maine,” said Chief Bob MacKenzie of the Kennebunk Police Department. “With a mission to provide valuable education and tools to residents, RALI Maine and its diverse group of partners will make a real impact across our great state.”

In addition to educating Mainers about proper drug disposal, RALI Maine will offer community grants to local organizations dedicated to prevention, education and treatment of substance use disorders. Education kits, policymaker engagement, and community events will be an initial priority for RALI Maine and its partner organizations.
